ENGLISH
The department aims to develop the abilities of individual children in order that they may achieve their maximum potential and fulfil the requirements of the National Literacy Strategies at Key Stages 2 and 3. Emphasis is placed on developing the ability to read fluently and understand the meaning of what is being read; to write legibly, accurately and with imagination; to appreciate the richness of language and to speak and listen in an effective manner. A variety of teaching and learning styles is used in carefully structured lessons. The range of skills that they will develop is far reaching and will be of practical value in other curriculum areas as well as English.
Pupils experience group activities in the drama studio. These activities are linked to, and complement, their learning in English lessons. The well resourced library is used within English lessons to ensure pupils develop independent reading skills, which they can then use to support their studies and for personal enjoyment.
Various lunch time clubs take place to enhance pupils’ reading and writing skills, such as Reading club and Scrabble club.
